In 2010, ExxonMobil acquired XTO Energy and became the leading producer of natural gas in the U.S.

Natural gas has and will continue to play a key role in ensuring that we are able to meet our energy needs. Cutting edge technology is now allowing us to unlock historic amounts of natural gas, and this source of energy is estimated to overtake coal as the world’s second-largest source of energy due to increased access to supply and growing demand. ExxonMobil continues to pursue natural gas opportunities around the world. In North America, the merger with XTO Energy Inc. significantly expanded our presence in some of the most prolific unconventional basins. Following the XTO merger in 2010, we are now the leading producer of natural gas and have the largest proved gas reserves in the United States.
